When I was at elementary school (like you gals and guys), I lived in a small village in the countryside. Then, when I went to high school, I drove almost two hours every day to the nearest big city (Maribor) and back, but I still lived at home. Then, I moved to a city, Ljubljana, where I went to university. I lived there for almost six years. Let me tell you - life in the city is a lot different than life a small countryside village. Let's find out what life in cities is like.

Tema ure: Life in cities

Cilj ure: poznam nekaj značilnosti velemest in znam našteti nekaj prednosti in pomanjkljivosti življenja v mestu

Čas za reševanje: cca. 30 minut

TASK 1

Open your student's book on page 198 and read the notes under the pictures in 3a. Think about which piece of information could go with each city.

TASK 2

Now listen to the clip and write which city goes with which piece of information. Use a sticky note or write LIFE IN CITIES in your notebook and write the solutions down there.

TASK 3

Next, read the texts under 2b. There are some interesting facts about cities in both texts. Let's find some real-life examples. Search the internet and find:

  • three cities with more than ten million inhabitants:
  • two major cities (with at least 1 million inhabitants) with no subway system:
  • two cities Europe that are more than 2000 years old (hint: we have one in Slovenia):
  • how many people in the world live in cities:
  • a city that is also a country (hint: there are countries/cities like this in Europe and Asia):

TASK 4

Finally - turn back to page 197 and have a look at the picture under 2a. Would you live in a city? Why not? What are some of the pros and cons of living in a city? Make a mindmap for COUNTRYSIDE and CITY in your notebook. Write down the pros and cons using the information from the clip in 3a and the texts in 2b.

Kaj so nekateri plusi in minusi življenja v mestu?

TASK 5 (OPTIONAL)

Check out this video about a sustainable city in Dubai if you have some spare time.

Če imaš kaj časa, si lahko pogledaš video o trajnostno zasnovanem mestu v Dubaju.

And you're done for today!

******---------..........._____________...........---------****** CONTENT OF THE WEEK ******---------..........._____________...........---------******

Every week, I will be adding some extra stuff for you to listen to, watch, read and so on.
THIS IS NOT EXTRA WORK. These are just things I enjoy and I want to share with you awesome people.

Since we're going back to school soon - it seems only fitting to share this song. It's one of the best rock songs ever written and it needs no introduction. Listen to it and have fun :)
