Alright, day two of e-learning! Hope you didn't have too many problems yesterday. And if you do have problems, you know what to do: ASK ME on the forum, chatroom or private messages.
In class, we talked a bit about movies. Your workbook has a nifty exercise or two for words connected with movies, so let's start there.
JUST SO YOU KNOW: This lesson looks really long - don't worry. There's not that much to actually do. More than two thirds (2/3) is pure EXPLANATION and EXAMPLES that you have to read or just copy. Remember, IF YOU SEE SOMETHING IN RED, COPY IT IN YOUR NOTEBOOK.
JOB #1: Revise movie genres and solve exercise 19 on page 157 in your Workbook (delovni zvezek).
Use pons.si (click) to help you out.
JOB #2: Read the explanations and examples below. The words are from exercise 20 on page 158 in your Workbook (delovni zvezek).
Use the
WORD BANK under the exercise to help you. IF SOMETHING IN THIS TEXT IS IN RED, COPY IT IN YOU NOTEBOOK. Write the TITLE: MOVIE VOCABULARY.
There are some things I want to point out here. I'm going to explain and give more examples with the words in the box one by one.
came - this is not a good option. It should be CAME OUT. When a movie, game or book COMES OUT, you can go see it in theaters. Usually we mention the year or another time. Usually we use the past simple, present continuous or present simple.EXAMPLES:
One of my
favourite movies, Annihilation, CAME OUT in 2014.
DOOM Eternal is COMING OUT next week and I can’t wait to play it
(if I have time).
When is the next Game of Thrones book COMING OUT?
cast - is explained nicely in the WORD BANK. I just want to show you a practical example from IMDb.com:
dubbed - dubbing is not something we do in Slovenia. It's one reason why a lot of you have great English ;)
It's connected closely with
subtitles - which is what we have in Slovenia. All movies are subtitled if they're not in Slovenia.
EXTRA ASSIGNMENT: google which countries DUB their movies (hint: Germany is one of them) and which use SUBS, or subtitles (hint: Slovenia) write the countries in your notebook.
There's a meme in the ANIME (Japanese cartoon community) that says "subs, not dubs". This means they hate it when the TV station or streaming service dubs their anime.

The new Star Wars movies got good reviews because they used PRACTICAL EFFECTS (costumes, makeup, dolls...). Some movies, like Avatar, used CGI (Computer Generated Imagery), which is done on computers.
plot - what happens in the movie, the story.
(to be) set - usually we talk about where and when a movie, book or game IS SET. The place is then called the SETTING. A SETTING can be FICTIONAL, too.
Indiana Jones IS SET in Egypt before WWII.
Inception IS SET in the near future.
Lord of the Rings IS SET in the fictional world of Middle Earth.
(to be) shot - this one is tricky because it's a movie term. Usually we talk about HOW a film is shot. You can also talk about certain KINDS OF SHOTS. We can either say it's shot WELL or BADLY. If a movie is shot WELL, you can see what's going on, the way the camera shows the actors and the action shows what kind of scene we're watching. If the director wants us to be tense and scared, he uses FAST SHOTS and CLOSEUPS. If he wants the movie to go slow, he uses SLOW SHOTS and less camera movement.
EXAMPLES:
The movie IS SHOT BEAUTIFULLY/VERY WELL/INCREDIBLY WELL.
You can't see the action because of HOW the movie IS SHOT.
stunts - are dangerous things that actors do in movies, like jump off of buildings and cars or out of fires. The person doing the stunts for the main actor is called a STUNT PERFORMER or STUNTWOMAN or STUNTMAN. Some actors (like Angelina Jolie and Tom Cruise) DO THEIR OWN STUNTS.
JOB #3: Solve exercises 20 and 21 on p. 158 in your Workbook.
Now that you know all that, this should be easy. Fill the gaps with the appropriate word.
I have one more job for you, similar to something we did in class.
JOB #4: Find EIGHT of the TWELVE words we have mentioned in movie reviews for a movie of your choice and copy the sentence in your notebook. Underline the word.
Remember: to find reviews, go to IMDb.com, type a movie into search, and click Reviews (see below). I suggest you use critic reviews this time, NOT user reviews. You can use the "Search" function in your browser (CTRL + F) to find the words more quickly.
This is what you get if you hold CTRL and press F in Firefox. Use the arrows to find the word if there is more than one.

EXAMPLE:
From this review.
The Shawshank Redemption is no exception, from the opening
aerial SHOT of the prison to his wonderful use of muted tones and colors
to create a drab look.
The music isn’t bombastic or loud, like the characters and the SETTING, it is quiet and muted.
Too often in film prisons are wide open, but even in the SCENES where
the characters have space to work with they are SHOT so that they are
corralled into small spaces.
But you find your own!
That's all for today!

On Thursday, we'll have a look at some Eco vocabulary.
