How about that. Last lesson of week 1. Are you still alive?

Today, we're going to look at some vocabulary related to endangered and threatened animals.
Open you book on page 127. Check out the animals and the sentences below the pictures.
JOB #1: Write at least 5 sentences for the animals (exercise 5b on page 127) in your notebook.
There's an example in your book. Here's one more:
I think the rhino is in danger because we are hunting it for its horn.
There are also one or two interesting phrases here. Let me point them out.
The first one is HUNTING FOR SPORT. You can also do other things FOR SPORT, like FISHING FOR SPORT. This means you don't hunt the animals to eat them later, you kill them because it's... fun.
I find this problematic, but you make up your own mind about this.
The animals people hunt are called GAME.
SMALL GAME are small animals like birds, rabbits, groundhogs, badgers and so on. BIG GAME are large animals like moose, bears, deer, elk, and so on.
The second one - you probably know what a HORN is. But you might not know what a TUSK is. It's what ELEPHANTS and BOARS have (Slovenian = okel, oklji).
ELEPHANT TUSKS
BOAR TUSKS
JOB #2: Go to Wikipedia and find why and how seriously the animals in your book are endangered or threatened.
Copy the reason in your notebook. CHOOSE 6 animals. You can do all 10 if you like.
I already showed you how to find the CONSERVATION LEVEL on Wikipedia. Let me show you again.
Go to the English wikipedia page. Then type in the name of the animal, for example "gorilla".
Usually, you get the animal family or subfamily, or even the genus. We need the species. Usually, there is an example picture of the most common species and some text under it. Click on that.
First, copy the actual conservation status. You will find this on the right side of the page. Example:
Then click on Conservation or Conservation status in the Contents and copy the relevant information in your notebook.
Read very carefully. We are looking for words like THREAT, threaten, endanger, cause, due to, risk etc.
For the gorilla
For the otter:
So - in your notebook, you should have something like this:
gorilla: critically endangered because of poaching, habitat loss, mining, climate change, commercial logging
otter: near threatened because of habitat loss, legal and illegal hunting and expansion of exotic fish species.
If you're having trouble with the words, remember your old friend, pons.si.
That's it for this week! Next week, we'll do some more revision for your test.
******---------..........._____________...........---------****** CONTENT OF THE WEEK ******---------..........._____________...........---------******
This
is our last lesson for this week. Every week, I will be adding some
extra stuff for you to listen to, watch, read and so on.
THIS IS NOT EXTRA WORK. These are just things I enjoy and I want to share with you awesome people.
This week, I have a song
for you. It is from one of my favorite music albums of all time. It's
called "The Dark Side of the Moon", by Pink Floyd. The song is called Time.
I won't tell you what the song is about. Just listen to it, you might like it, you might not. If you want, you can send me a private message via the e-classroom or send me an e-mail at jaka.cresnar@os-preserjeradomlje.si and tell me what you think of the song, why you like it or not.
