Invitation to our high-level webinar on the occasion of the
16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence
and Human Rights Day
“Promising Practices to Protect Women’s Rights, Help Survivors of VAW
and End VAW in Asia and the Pacific”
on Zoom in English

In 1993, the UN Declaration on the Elimination of violence against women (VAW) defined VAW as “any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life.” Decades later, VAW remains unacceptably high all over the world. The Asia-Pacific region is no exception in this regard. Over 37% of women in South Asia, 40% of women in South-East Asia and up to 68% of women in the Pacific have experienced violence at the hands of their partners. Across Asia, studies show that 30 to 40% of women also suffer sexual harassment in the workplace.
We need to redouble all our efforts to put a stop to the vicious cycles of violence, which start in early childhood, and embrace survivor-centred approaches that bring women’s voices to the fore of our action. Not only is it our duty to protect and promote women’s human rights and well-being, as well as advance sustainable development for all, but also the universal benefit of doing so can be demonstrated by the economic estimate that reducing VAW would save the global economy over 8 trillion USD each year. Today, as the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated vulnerabilities and increased reports of domestic violence by up to 72% in some places, this work is more crucial than ever before.
By fostering key organized exchanges between a diverse set of relevant actors and stakeholders, this unique high-level webinar will highlight pathways for a collaborative and optimized approach to end VAW in the Asia-Pacific region.

Who we are
UNESCO seeks to build peace through international cooperation in education, social, human and natural sciences, culture, communication and information. UNESCO recently joined forces with the MenEngage Alliance, Promundo
The OECD works on establishing evidence-based international standards and finding solutions to a wide range of social, economic and environmental challenges. It supports countries in providing integrated, cross-ministerial and state- wide responses towards VAW through its Public Governance Committee (PGC) Strategy for Gender Mainstreaming and Action Plan, to evaluate data on intimate partner violence through its Family Database and the Pursuit of Gender Equality report and overall presents a strong foundation for addressing VAW via Gender Recommendations.
The Associated Country Women of the World exists to amplify the voices of rural women, so that the problems they face and the solutions they raise are heard and acknowledged by international policy-makers and legislators. Rural women are the backbone of families, of communities, of nations, but they are often a silent support, adapting to change and tragedy with comparative ease. They bear the burden of conflict, they go unheard in legislation, and they remain unprotected and unsupported. ACWW exists to change that. Long-term supporters of the Orange the World campaign, ACWW takes every opportunity to raise the realities experienced by our 9 million rural women members in 82 countries.
